Why this pick
Ringo Lam returns to the nervy, street-level Hong Kong crime mode of City on Fire, with fraught police work, volatile criminals and a relentlessly tightening sense of danger.
Why this pick
This rough-edged police thriller shares City on Fire’s bruising urban realism, abrasive action and interest in officers whose methods and allegiances grow dangerously blurred.
Why this pick
A single night of intersecting police and criminal pursuits delivers the same claustrophobic Hong Kong intensity, escalating tension and tragic sense that nobody can leave cleanly.
Why this pick
Its emotionally punishing focus on informants and police handlers echoes City on Fire’s central wound: professional duty turns trust into a weapon with devastating consequences.
Why this pick
A former undercover officer struggles to return to ordinary police life, making this a strong match for City on Fire’s concern with identity, suspicion and institutional damage.

01 / THE STORY
The undercover cop Chan Kam-wah, investigating a group of jewellery thieves, blows his cover and is stabbed to death by three attackers in a public marketplace. His superior, Inspector Lau, orders Ko Chow, another undercover policeman, to resume the investigations. Ko Chow accepts reluctantly: he would prefer not to perform another undercover assignment, since he had to arrest someone during his last mission who had trusted him as a friend.
