SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Jeffrey Lau’s earlier Journey to the West romp similarly turns a legendary Chinese tale into broad, playful nonsense, with Stephen Chow’s volatile comic energy and a deliberately anachronistic romantic streak.
02
Why this pick
The companion to Pandora’s Box keeps Lau’s irreverent fantasy-comedy style but leans further into doomed romance, identity play and extravagant wuxia-fable imagery.
03
Why this pick
A gleefully chaotic martial-arts parody from the same director, packed with stars behaving like lovelorn fools; its comic rhythm and affectionate destruction of wuxia grandeur closely fit Chinese Odyssey 2002.
04
Why this pick
Its cartoonish fight choreography, shameless melodrama and underdog romance offer a more polished but equally buoyant blend of slapstick and martial-arts fantasy.
05
Why this pick
Stephen Chow plays another irreverent opportunist in a wildly embellished period adventure, balancing bawdy verbal comedy, absurd disguises and swashbuckling momentum.

01 / THE STORY
The film is set in Ming Dynasty, China. Li Yilong (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) is the town bully, known for his boorish manners and reckless attitude which have endeared him to no one, save his sister Feng (Vicki Zhao) who has a curious penchant for cross-dressing. It is apparent early on that both these siblings are such misfits they have virtually no prospect of marriage.
