Why this pick
A sharp political satire with an invented campaign documentary format, using songs, media spectacle and a disarmingly charismatic candidate to expose the performance beneath public ideology.
Why this pick
Shares Bulworth’s late-1990s outrage at politics as image management, but channels it into a brisk, deadpan conspiracy farce about manufacturing public consent.
Why this pick
An incisive, funny look at idealism being reshaped by campaign machinery, with the same fascination for the gap between a candidate’s convictions and electable persona.
Why this pick
Another 1998 political comedy-drama balancing broad, human messiness with a skeptical view of campaigning, charisma and the moral compromises required to win.
Why this pick
A politically outspoken comedian unexpectedly entering electoral life gives this a comparable blend of populist anger, comic irreverence and concern over a compromised democratic system.

01 / THE STORY
In March 1996, Democratic Party (United States) United State Senate Jay Bulworth of California is losing his bid for re-election to a fiery young populist. Bulworth's American liberalism views, formed in the 1960s and 1970s, have lost favor with voters, so he has conceded to more Conservatism politics and to accepting donations from big corporations. In addition, though he and his wife have been having affairs with each other's knowledge for years, they must still present a happy façade in the interest of maintaining a good public image.
