Why this pick
Like Bringing Out the Dead, it plunges into an institutional world of psychological distress, using subjective imagery and a compassionate but harrowing perspective on a person nearing emotional collapse.
Why this pick
Its ambulance-worker setting and nocturnal unease echo Scorsese’s film, though it turns the protagonist’s damaged psyche into a colder, more claustrophobic character study.
Why this pick
A tense New York emergency-room drama with restless immediacy, moral fatigue, and a pressure-cooker institutional atmosphere that complements Bringing Out the Dead’s urban exhaustion.
Why this pick
Another nocturnal Manhattan odyssey about an isolated man confronting addiction, guilt, and the possibility of grace; its inward, insomnia-like rhythm closely suits Frank Pierce’s spiritual burnout.
Why this pick
Its raw Manhattan street life and unvarnished compassion for people caught in addiction offer a grounded counterpart to Bringing Out the Dead’s feverish encounters with the city’s wounded.

01 / THE STORY
In Manhattan in the early 1990s, Frank Pierce is a burned-out Voluntary ambulance (New York City) who works the graveyard shift in a two-man ambulance team with various different partners. Usually exhausted and depressed, he has not saved any patients in months and begins to see the ghosts of those lost, especially a homeless adolescent girl named Rose whose face appears on the bodies of others. Frank and his first partner Larry respond to a call by the family of a man named Mr. Burke who has entered cardiac arrest. Frank befriends Mr. Burke's distraught daughter Mary, a former junkie. Frank discovers Mary was childhood friends with Noel, a brain-damaged drug addict and delinquent who is frequently sent to the hospital.
