Why this pick
The most unnerving counterpart: a paranoid, citywide loss of humanity rendered through escalating dread, sleep anxiety, and a bleakly tactile 1970s atmosphere.
Why this pick
Like Ferrara’s military-base nightmare, it turns official containment and armed authority into sources of panic, with fractured families caught inside a rapidly spreading social collapse.
Why this pick
It shares Body Snatchers’ teen viewpoint and infiltration paranoia, but gives the suspicion a slicker, faster high-school pressure-cooker shape.
Why this pick
A pulpy, tense variation on the fear that familiar people have become something else, driven by mounting distrust and an enjoyably grimy genre-thriller mood.
Why this pick
Its stripped-down visual style and anti-authoritarian paranoia make everyday life feel secretly occupied, balancing conspiratorial tension with Carpenter’s tough, nocturnal energy.
