Why this pick
Like Black Robe, it places religious conviction inside a brutal colonial frontier, giving equal weight to spiritual idealism, cultural collision, and the physical ordeal of travel through an overwhelming wilderness.
Why this pick
Malick’s tactile natural imagery and hushed, contemplative approach to early colonial contact echo Black Robe’s sense of awe and unease as incompatible worlds attempt to understand one another.
Why this pick
This dreamlike river expedition similarly examines colonial intrusion, spiritual knowledge, and the limits of outsiders’ understanding, with stark black-and-white images that make the landscape feel spiritually alive.
Why this pick
For Black Robe’s 17th-century North American frontier and perilous passage through contested territory, this offers a more kinetic but still atmospheric vision of warfare, alliances, and wilderness survival.
Why this pick
Its oppressive expedition narrative shares Black Robe’s unforgiving wilderness and collision of European ambition with an alien environment, though Herzog pushes the experience toward feverish existential dread.

01 / THE STORY
Set in Canada (New France) in 1634 (in the period of conflicts known as the Beaver Wars), the film begins in the settlement that will one day become Quebec City. Jesuit missionaries are trying to encourage the local Algonquin people First Nations to embrace Christianity, with thus far only limited results. Samuel de Champlain, founder of the settlement, sends Father LaForgue, a young Jesuit priest, to find a distant Mission (Christian) in a Wyandot people village. With winter approaching, the journey will be difficult and cover as much as 1500 miles.
