Factotum
Why this pick
Like Barfly, it follows Bukowski’s alter ego through dead-end work, cheap rooms and drinking, but with a quieter, deadpan Scandinavian distance that still honours the bruised humor and stubborn dignity.

Why this pick
Like Barfly, it follows Bukowski’s alter ego through dead-end work, cheap rooms and drinking, but with a quieter, deadpan Scandinavian distance that still honours the bruised humor and stubborn dignity.
Why this pick
Its aimless barroom regulars, humiliating jobs and worn-down neighborhood create a similarly funny-sad portrait of self-sabotage, observed with affection rather than moral judgment.
Why this pick
A loose, melancholy study of drifting men and failed dreams, with battered American spaces and an unsentimental tenderness that aligns with Barfly’s poetry amid degradation.
Why this pick
Jarmusch shares Barfly’s black-and-white, low-life nocturnal texture, oddball humor and sympathy for outsiders who keep moving through bad luck without becoming sentimentalized.
Why this pick
Its road-bound, working-class melancholy and dry humor find grace in damaged, unglamorous lives, balancing pain and comic resilience in a way that complements Barfly’s humanism.
