Mann brings the same muscular, immersive seriousness to a man pressured by public identity, institutions, and personal conviction, with patient momentum and vivid period texture.
Why this pick
Its sweeping, intensely performed portrait of Malcolm X shares Ali’s interest in Black public identity, faith, political awakening, and the cost of becoming a symbol.
Why this pick
A forceful boxing-centered biographical drama whose ring scenes support, rather than overshadow, a larger story of dignity, injustice, and resolve.
Why this pick
This electrifying documentary returns to Ali in Zaire, capturing his charisma, political significance, and the cultural charge around the Foreman fight with exceptional immediacy.
Why this pick
Like Ali, it treats boxing as a cinematic arena for a complicated public figure, but with a rawer, more punishing psychological intensity and striking visual control.

01 / THE STORY
The film begins with Muhammad Ali before his championship debut against then List of heavyweight boxing champions Sonny Liston. During the pre-fight weigh-in Clay heavily taunts Liston (such as calling Liston a "big ugly bear"). In the fight Clay is able to dominate the early rounds of the match, but halfway through he complains of a burning feeling in his eyes (implying that Liston has tried to cheat) and says he is unable to continue. However, his trainer/manager Angelo Dundee gets him to keep fighting. Once Clay is able to see again he easily dominates the fight and right before round seven Liston quits, making Clay the second youngest heavyweight champion at the time after Floyd Patterson. Clay spends valued time with Malcolm X and the two decide to take a trip to Africa.
