Why this pick
Radu Jude’s earlier film shares Aferim!’s dry, unsparing social observation, deadpan humour, and patient framing, turning an apparently simple situation into a sharp portrait of power and humiliation.
Why this pick
If Aferim!’s corrosive irony and willingness to expose collective prejudice appealed, this is another fiercely intelligent Radu Jude satire—formally bolder, contemporary, and equally merciless about public morality.
Why this pick
Its long, observational journey through indifferent institutions has the same bleakly comic accumulation, moral anger, and refusal to soften cruelty with easy sentiment.
Why this pick
Another meticulously composed period work from Jude, it pairs formal visual beauty with bodily discomfort, mordant wit, and an unromantic view of social hierarchies.
Why this pick
For Aferim!’s controlled tension and clear-eyed depiction of people trapped by brutal systems, Mungiu offers an equally rigorous, immersive moral ordeal in a very different historical moment.
