Why this pick
Like About Schmidt, it finds quiet gravity in an older Midwesterner’s late-life journey, using an unhurried road narrative, plainspoken encounters, and deep compassion rather than broad sentimentality.

Why this pick
Like About Schmidt, it finds quiet gravity in an older Midwesterner’s late-life journey, using an unhurried road narrative, plainspoken encounters, and deep compassion rather than broad sentimentality.
Why this pick
Payne again turns a modest Midwestern trip into a sharply observed portrait of aging, family disappointment, and stubborn dignity, with the same dry humour and tender emotional reserve.
Why this pick
This is another gently funny, clear-eyed reckoning with mortality and routine, centered on an elderly man whose small daily interactions gradually acquire unexpected emotional weight.
Why this pick
Its protagonist is similarly stranded by a life-changing transition; Payne’s blend of awkward comedy, flawed family dynamics, and restrained grief should strongly suit About Schmidt’s bittersweet tone.
Why this pick
A curmudgeonly older man confronts isolation and purpose through reluctant connections with others. It is warmer and more overtly comic, but shares Schmidt’s humane interest in loneliness and renewal.
