Why this pick
Its cool black-and-white realism, patient reconstruction of a true crime, and grave attention to perpetrators and victims echo the unshowy dread of 10 Rillington Place.
Why this pick
A bleak fact-based crime drama whose power comes from procedural detail and the lasting human cost of violence and a troubled justice system.
Why this pick
This stark, low-key true-crime drama shares the earlier film’s unvarnished period texture and disturbing refusal to turn criminal violence into spectacle.
Why this pick
A sober true-crime procedural focused on the frustrating intersection of murder investigation, bureaucracy, and institutional denial, with tension generated by method rather than action.

01 / THE STORY
The film begins in 1944 with John Christie (murderer) murdering an acquaintance called Muriel Eady; he lures her to his flat in 10 Rillington Place by promising to cure her bronchitis with a "special mixture", then incapacitates her with Town Gas, strangles her with a piece of rope, and has (implied) necrophilia. He buries her in his flat block's communal garden, where a dog uncovers one of his previous victims.
